Gender Equity in Intercollegiate Athletics: A Practical Guide for Colleges and Universities--2008
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NJ1)
The July 1993 report of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Gender Equity Task Force concluded that clear evidence indicated that the organization had been unsuccessful in providing equitable opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics for women. This book, first published in 1994 and targeted to college and university administrators, general counsel, faculty athletics representatives, Title IX and equal opportunity officers, athletics administrators, staff, and student-athletes, is intended to convey the complex and evolving landscape of gender equity law, while also providing advice and real-life examples to assist in efforts to alleviate inequalities in intercollegiate programs. Contents include: (1) Sources of Law; (2) Understanding Title IX Athletics Compliance--A Step-by-Step Guide; (3) Gender Equity and the NCAA, including the EADA; (4) Harassment Issues Facing Colleges and Universities under Title IX; (5) Employment Issues; (6) Gender Equity Plans, Audits, Policies and Training; (7) Case Law; (8) An Athletics Director's Summary Guide; (9) Title IX Flowcharts; and (10) Frequently Asked Questions. Thirteen appendices are included: (1) Title IX Regulations; (2) Policy Interpretation; (3) Title IX Athletics Investigators Manual; (4) Clarification of Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Guidance: The Three-Part Test; (5) Dear Colleague Letter, 1998 Clarification; (6) Dear Colleague Letter, 2003 Further Clarification; (7) Dear Colleague Letter, 2004, Title IX Officer and Grievance Procedures; (8) 2008 OCR Revised Case Processing Manual; (10) Dear Colleague Letter, 2008, Athletics Activities; (11) 2001 Revised Sexual Harassment Guidance: Harassment of Students by School Employees, Others Students or Third Parties; (12) 1997 EEOC Enforcement Guidance on Sex Discrimination in the Compensation of Sports Coaches in Educational Institutions; and (13) List of organizations working in women's sports, education and gender equity follows. Also included are the links to the offices of the Office for Civil Rights and research articles and web pages. (Contains 2 footnotes and 4 tables.)
