Lewis, Charles; Willingham, Warren W. – 1995
As strongly suggested by recent work, patterns of gender difference can change because of changes in the selectivity of the sample itself. This is a statistical influence connected with the distributions of female and male scores, rather than a substantive influence related to demographic characteristics of the sample such as age or ethnicity. It…

Vaughter, Reesa M. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1975
Assessed the relative difficulty in the utilization of oddity and matching response strategies in 144 children, ages 5-13 years. A model of matching and oddity problem-solving is presented based on the data collected. (Author/ED)

Gold, Dolores; And Others – Child Development, 1984
Two studies investigated two groups of young children at the ages of four and eight years, respectively. Subjects were required to solve a simple problem task by performing a response opposite to that demonstrated by an adult. Girls' performance was significantly worse than boys', regardless of the sex of the model. (Author/CI)

Walker, Lawrence J. – Child Development, 1989
Examines several issues concerning Gilligan's and Kohlberg's models of moral orientations and Kohlberg's model of moral stages in a longitudinal study of 233 subjects aged 5 to 63 years. Results revealed few violations of the stage sequence over the two-year longitudinal interval. (RJC)

Markovits, Henry; Benenson, Joyce; Dolenszky, Eva – Child Development, 2001
Examined children's internal representations of peer interactions. Found that children as young as preschool-age rate typical boys as preferring group interactions more than typical girls, more likely than girls to be friends with one another if they are friends with the same target boy or girl, respectively; and as less likely than girls to know…

Pellegrini, Anthony D. – 1983
This study examined a model suggesting that personal variables (age and gender) and environmental variables (activity centers) affect social-cognitive aspects of children's play. A total of 80 children (32 boys and 48 girls) participated. Same-age and same-gender dyads from each of two age groups (4- and 5-year-olds) were observed playing in an…

West, Candace; Zimmerman, Don H. – Social Problems, 1977

Kochanska, Grazyna; Gross, Jami N.; Lin, Mei-Hua; Nichols, Kate E. – Child Development, 2002
Examined early development of guilt in 106 children observed in laboratory paradigms in which they were led to believe they had damaged valuable objects during 2 sessions at 22, 33, and 45 months. Found support for a mediational model in which fearful temperament contributed to guilt proneness, which served to inhibit children's tendency to…

McDowell, Eugene E.; Stillion, Judith M. – New Directions for Child Development, 1994
Applies a suicide trajectory model to rates of suicide and attempted suicide to explain commonalities and age differences in risk factors affecting suicide across the life span. (HTH)

Bowman, Marilyn L. – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1990
An inventory with five subscales was developed to identify major kinds of coping used in dealing with recurring marital problems, based on 368 subjects. The final scale of 64 items was studied to determine the scale-score attributes of subjects sorted for age, sex, education, and years married, and for aspects of validity. (Author/TE)

Wilson, Keren Brown; DeShane, Michael R. – 1983
Although the rate of divorce among older Americans has increased steadily, little attention has been paid to late life divorce. To describe the role of age and other factors which might influence adjustment to divorce in later life, data from a larger pilot study were used: 81 divorced persons over the age of 60 completed in-depth, structured…

Developmental Changes in Laryngeal and Respiratory Function with Variations in Sound Pressure Level.

Stathopoulos, Elaine T.; Sapienza, Christine M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 1997
The development of the speech production system was investigated among 120 children (ages 4-14 years) and 20 adults. Aerodynamic and acoustic results suggest that men and 14-year-old boys function differently than women and all other groups of children. Data generally suggest that laryngeal and respiratory behavior of children is not easily…

Chen, Zhe; Siegler, Robert S. – Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, 2000
Analyzed 1.5- and 2.5-year-olds' problem solving and learning. Found that changes in toddlers' strategies could be assessed reliably on a trial-by-trial basis, that changes followed the basic form predicted by the overlapping waves model, and that analyses could reveal information about the qualitative and quantitative aspects of their learning.…
