Project Magnify: Increasing Reading Skills in Students with Low Vision
Farmer, Jeanie; Morse, Stephen E.
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v101 n12 p763-768 Dec 2007
Modeled after Project PAVE (Corn et al., 2003) in Tennessee, Project Magnify is designed to test the idea that students with low vision who use individually prescribed magnification devices for reading will perform as well as or better than students with low vision who use large-print reading materials. Sixteen students with low vision were enrolled in the study. All the participants took oral reading tests at the beginning and end of the 2005-06 school year, and their reading rates and comprehension levels were recorded. The reading rates of all but one large-print reader increased, but no student in the large-print group showed any significant increase in reading comprehension skills. Of the eight students in the magnifier group who were available for the duration of the project, all increased their reading rate, and five showed a marked increase in their reading comprehension skills.
