NCAA Division I and II HBCU Transfer Student-Athletes: Social Identity, Negative Affectivity, and Exclusivity Differences
Phyllon Jackson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to determine if, and to what extent, there were statistically significant differences between NCAA Division I and Division II HBCU transfer student-athletes in terms of social identity, negative affectivity, and exclusivity. The athletic identity concept served as the conceptual framework for this study. Research questions asked if there were any statistically significant differences between NCAA Division I and Division II HBCU transfer student-athletes in terms of social identity, exclusivity, and negative affectivity. A convenience sample (N = 77) of transfer student-athletes from NCAA Division I and Division II institutions throughout the United States were surveyed online using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale. The Social Identity subscale had very low reliability (alpha = 0.197) and could not be used for a comparative test. The results of non-parametric Mann-Whitney U tests showed statistically no significant differences between the compared groups in terms of exclusivity (U = 691.500, z = -0.409, p = 0.683) and negative affectivity (U = 729.500, z = -0.016, p = 0.987). The results were considered inconclusive and cannot be generalized because the study was conducted with a small convenience sample. Further research is recommended, using a larger sample of transfer student-athletes within an HBCU setting to examine the same variable structure.
