The purpose of this paper is to increase awareness of the self concept as a variable, to indicate what is known about the self concept from existing research, to discuss its importance to the school and its effect on learning, and to offer a method of assessment which is tied to a definition arbitrarily made as a starting point for researchers. A child is defined as having a positive self concept, or self image, when (1) he likes himself, his family, and his people, (2) he believes what he thinks, says and does makes a difference, (3) he believes he can be successful, (4) he believes he can solve a variety of problems, (5) he has a realistic estimate of his own abilities and limitations, and (6) he expresses feelings of pleasure and enjoyment. Each part of this definition is expanded and illustrated. From the expanded definition, nine psycho-social factors were extracted: self awareness, appropriate emotional affect, good relationship with family, good relationship with peers, efficient verbal participation, positive approach to learning, realistic reaction to success and failure, and self satisfaction. A classroom rating scale for teachers was devised, using these nine factors. A strategy for obtaining an indication of self image from children is outlined and directions are given for administering the semi-projective device.
