Tema, B. O. – Journal of Biological Education, 1989
Investigated are the alternative conceptions of the concept "animal" held by African youngsters. Three forms of thinking among the pupils are identified. An attempt is made to explain the possible origin of anthropocentric thinking among pupils. Urban and rural groups are compared. (CW)

Welford, A. G.; Donnelly, A. F. – Journal of Biological Education, 1989
This paper shows that more pupils take biology than the other sciences in England. Biology attracts pupils of all abilities and girls in particular. Performance data reported suggests that the study of biology is not as effective in enhancing science performance as are the physical sciences. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biology, Females, Foreign Countries

Merritt, Sheridan V. – American Biology Teacher, 1989
The use of actographs for studying animal activity is discussed. Described are running recorders for rodents, perching and feeding recorders for birds, and tilting box recorders for studying the movement of reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, College Science, High Schools, Laboratory Animals

Lockard, James O. – American Biology Teacher, 1989
Described is a program in which elementary school students visit high school biology classes and are taught by the high school students. Discussed are requirements, costs, materials, curriculum, preparation of student instructors, sequence of events, facilities, and program advantages. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Cross Age Teaching, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science

Johnson, Leland G. – American Biology Teacher, 1989
The procedures, data analysis, and applications of this laboratory activity are detailed. An example of the results obtained is provided. Sources of the tadpoles and their treatment are discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biology, College Science, Higher Education

Foote, MaryAnn – Science Teacher, 1990
Pollination vectors of a variety of types are described including beetles, bees, flies, moths, birds, bats, and the wind. Some of the adaptations of plants designed to help facilitate pollination are discussed. Strategies for incorporating this information into a lesson plan are suggested. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Field Studies, Laboratory Procedures, Plants (Botany)

Lisowski, Marylin; Disinger, John F. – Environmentalist, 1988
Reviewed are studies dealing with cognitive learning in the environment, investigating the advantages of field instruction for the purposes of concept and content learning. Biological and earth sciences are emphasized because instruction in these areas often focus on the environment. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Cognitive Development, Earth Science, Environmental Education

Graz, C. J. Michael – Biochemical Education, 1998
Presents a novel idea for teaching a scientific concept using a poem that describes the major perspectives on the origins of living systems as the medium of instruction. Addresses major concepts such as chemical evolution, DNA vs. RNA, protocell formation, coacervates, panspermia, and special creation. (Author/CCM)
