FCS at the Center of CTE: A Proposition for FCS Educators and Stakeholders
Duncan, Janine
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v110 n3 p10-18 Sum 2018
In 2002, the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE) published "New Designs for Career and Technical Education at the Secondary and Postsecondary Levels," in which Copa and Wolff (2002) proposed that the mission of Career and Technical Education (CTE) is "to serve individuals and the nation through direct lifelong preparation for work, family, and community roles and responsibilities." The suggestion that CTE directly prepares individuals and the nation for family roles and responsibilities reflects an explicit commitment to, and inclusion of, family and consumer sciences (FCS). More recent efforts to conceptualize CTE have evolved to add philosophical shape to the field (e.g., Martinez, 2007), and perhaps more concretely, through the Common Career Technical Core (CCTC) and related Career Ready Practices (National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium, 2012). Within these examples, there is no explicit mention of FCS, though Martinez (2007) anchors his philosophical framework on Copa and Wolff's work (2002). The CCTC Career Ready Practices (CRP), which transcend specific Career Pathways and Programs of Study, include measures that relate directly to the FCS curriculum (e.g., CRP #3: Attend to Personal Health and Financial Wellbeing).
