This lesson, for grades 7-12, correlates with Era 8, Standard 3c of the National History Standards for United States History: "evaluate the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and assess the implication for civil liberties." The lesson provides background on the internment of Japanese Americans during the war and identifies the camp called Heart Mountain Relocation Center, located between Powell and Cody, Wyoming, where 10,000 people were interned. The lesson's objective is to compare, contrast, and draw conclusions based on competing historical evidence related to the Heart Mountain Relocation Center. It presents four activities for students to investigate the circumstances of Heart Mountain. A chronology of events leading to Japanese relocation and a sample document analysis worksheet are included, along with the following relevant primary source documents: letters, a diary entry, photographs and sketches, a statement from one of the internees, and the executive order of President Franklin Roosevelt.
