Five adolescent novels with significant homosexual themes were analyzed for patterns of conflict and resolution. Content analysis revealed eight major conflict situations in the novels: sexual conflicts, interpersonal conflicts, peer conflicts, intrapersonal conflicts, parental/family conflicts, heterosexual character conflicts, community conflicts, and conflicts with authority figures. The conflicts were resolved in numerous ways; but in many of these resolutions, homosexual characters and their problems were viewed humanistically. The homosexual characters were often presented as victims of a harsh society. It was concluded that although these novels may act as model information transmission agents in psychosocial learning processes, final determination of their effectiveness in modeling behavior and attitudes probably lies within the personal experiences and background of the individual reader.
