Baker, William P.; Moore, Cathy Ronstadt – American Biology Teacher, 1998
Understanding antibody structure and function is difficult for many students. The rearrangement of constant and variable regions during antibody differentiation can be effectively simulated using a paper model. Describes a hands-on laboratory exercise which allows students to model antibody diversity using readily available resources. (PVD)

Lach, Michael; Loverude, Michael – American Biology Teacher, 1998
Presents a series of simple and inexpensive hands-on activities with a host of extension lesson ideas that can be used to actively introduce students to the scientific theory of evolution. Lessons are designed to thwart common student difficulties. Classes are structured around a predator-prey simulation game that creates a springboard for…

Foster, Helen M. – American Biology Teacher, 1976
Reviewed are "adventure-type" environmental education activities incorporated into a secondary level biology course. Student wilderness experiences included 24 weekend activities of hiking, bird watching, camping, and cross-country skiing. (SL)

Puls, Dan; O'Brien, Pamela – Science Scope, 1994
Provides a behind the scenes account of what goes on day-to-day at a zoo. Describes activities that allow students to explore the positive and negative aspects of issues that are raised regarding zoos. (ZWH)

Seymour, Lowell A.; Padberg, Lawrence F. – Science Education, 1975
Twenty-two tenth grade biology classes performed a simulated problem solving game. Half of each class completed the exercise first as individuals and then in small groups; the other half reversed this order. Results showed that group work preceded by individual work was the most effective arrangement. (MLH)

Okebukola, Peter Akinsola – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
The effects of cooperative learning on attitudes of students toward laboratory work were studied with ninth-grade biology students in Nigeria. It was found to be successful in developing favorable attitudes. Reasons for this are discussed. (MNS)

Merritt, Sheridan V. – American Biology Teacher, 1980
Described is a case study used in an introductory college biology course that provides a basis for generating debate on an issue concerning the regulation of controversial food additives and prescription drugs. The case study contained within this article deals with drug screening, specifically with information related to thalidomide. (CS)

Stazinski, Wieslaw – International Journal of Science Education, 1988
Describes biological competitions at the high school level in Poland. Argues that they can be used to enhance and maintain students' interest in the subject. (Author/YP)

Bisbee, Gregory D.; Kaiser, Cheryl A. – American Biology Teacher, 1997
Describes an activity that integrates biology and physics concepts by experimenting with the seed dispersal of common milkweed or similar wind-dispersed seeds. Student teams collect seeds and measure several parameters, review principles of trajectory motion, perform experiments, and graph data. Students examine the ideas of…
