James, Robert K. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
The purpose of this study was to determine the concerns of Texas science teachers about the 40 percent laboratory time rule just prior to enforcement and at the end of its first year of implementation. The methodology, results of the first and second years, conclusions, and implications for teaching science are discussed. (KR)
Descriptors: Laboratory Experiments, Questionnaires, Science Curriculum, Science Education

Kinchin, Ian M. – Journal of Biological Education, 1987
Describes the Tardigrada as a group of animals suitable for close study in project work. Gives reasons for their suitability and an illustrated identification key. Discusses possible investigations into the ecology and physiology of tardigrades. (Author/CW)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Higher Education, Invertebrates

Harvey, T. J.; Wareham, M. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1984
This investigation showed no sex difference between boys and girls with regard to practical work at the end of their first year of secondary school and no difference between schools and groupings (all boys, all girls, mixed schools with mixed science classes, and mixed schools with single sex science classes). (JN)
Descriptors: Grouping (Instructional Purposes), Science Education, Science Experiments, Science Instruction

Schallies, Michael; Redeker, Jorg – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Discusses general construction principles for miniaturized laboratory glassware. Describes a prototype experimental kit that allows the carrying out of all standard laboratory operations and discusses a trial use of the equipment with students 16- to 17-years-old. (CW)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Glass, Higher Education
Zimmet, Eva; Koethe, Rainer – 1986
In the 20 years since the inauguraion of "Jugend forscht" (Young Researchers) over 26,000 boys and girls have taken part in this annual Olympiad of young innovators. This brochure gives an insight into the diversity of themes dealt with by the "Jufos" (young researchers) and into their ability to achieve astonishing…

McCollum, Terry L. – 1988
A conflict exists over the use of animals in the classroom. One aspect of this use involved the dissection of animals. Animal protection advocates report that dissections constitute abuse of the animals dissected. The advocates state that what is learned by dissection could be more effectively learned by other means. Some science educators state…

Lumpe, Andrew T.; Scharmann, Lawrence C. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
The results of an in-depth analysis of the lab activities found in two popular high school biology textbooks are presented. Activities were rated against 24 task categories that parallel skills or behaviors which reflect scientific inquiry, problem-solving skills, manipulative skills, and observational skills. (25 references) (KR)
Descriptors: Biology, Decision Making, Laboratory Experiments, Observation
Harpole, Sandra H. – 1987
Some researchers have argued that it is important to match teaching styles with students' learning styles, although a relatively small amount of research has been done on learning styles in science. This study focused on the differences between male and female secondary school chemistry students in an effort to determine the relationship of gender…

Stedman, Carlton H. – Science Education, 1987
Discusses the history of American science and science education, with particular emphasis on the development of scientific inquiry and experimentation. Focuses primarily on the activities of individuals in the 1800's, and the introduction of science into secondary schools and higher education institutions in the early 1900's. (TW)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Inquiry, Science Education

Aston, T. J. – Journal of Biological Education, 1987
Outlines an adaptive framework for the study of plants and their pollinators in which both partners in the ecological relationship are seen as maximizing fitness through efficient use of the other as a resource. Suggests experimental projects to examine the validity of these assumptions giving an evolutionary emphasis. (Author/CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, College Science, Ecology, Environmental Education

Orlans, F. Barbara; And Others – Science Teacher, 1991
Discussed are the two sides to the question of laboratory dissections. Alternatives to dissection are proposed as well as the importance of incorporating dissections in a science curriculum. (KR)
Descriptors: Controversial Issues (Course Content), Dissection, Ethics, Experiential Learning

Dreyfus, Amos – Research in Rural Education, 1986
The educational potential of agriculture stems from the diversity and tangibility of its components. As a science based human activity, it may provide the educator with a unique combination of educational opportunities in a context which is authentic and accessible to the pupil and to the teacher. (JHZ)
Descriptors: Agricultural Education, Agriculture, Curriculum Development, Experiential Learning
Maley, Donald – 1986
This monograph discusses the current practices associated with the conduct of a research and experimentation program in technology education. It describes the background and bases of the program, the role of the teacher of research and experimentation, and advantages of the program. Next, the environment of the program is addressed, including the…

Choi, Byung-Soon; Gennaro, Eugene – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study which compared the effectiveness of microcomputer simulated experiences with that of parallel, hands-on laboratory instruction for teaching the concept of volume displacement to junior high school students. Results indicated that computer simulated experience were as affective as hands-on laboratory experiences. (TW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Computer Uses in Education, Experiential Learning
Shimoda, Koichi, Ed.; Ryu, Tae, Ed. – 1986
Organized by the International Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) and the Physics Education Society of Japan, the conference reported here, the first of its kind held in Asia, was designed to inform teachers of results of prior ICPE conferences as well as to explore desirable directions for physics education, and was attended by nearly 450…
