Gregorius, R. Ma. – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2017
Student performance in a flipped classroom with an animation-based content knowledge development system for the bottom third of the incoming first year college students was compared to that in a traditional lecture-based teaching method. 52% of these students withdrew from the traditionally taught General Chemistry course, compared to 22% in a…

Pan, Yi; Li, Yue Ru; Zhao, Yu; Akins, Daniel L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2015
A research project for senior undergraduates of chemistry has been developed to introduce syntheses of a series of monodispersed semiconductor PbS quantum dots (QDs) and their characterization methodologies. In this paper, we report the preparation of monodispersed semiconductor PbS QDs with sizes smaller than the exciton Bohr radius using a…

Firooznia, Fardad – American Biology Teacher, 2015
I describe and evaluate a fun and simple role-playing exercise that allows students to actively work through the process of translation. This exercise can easily be completed during a 50-minute class period, with time to review the steps and contemplate complications such as the effects of various types of mutations.

Sarkar, Sayantani; Chatterjee, Subhasish; Medina, Nancy; Stark, Ruth E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2013
An eight-session interdisciplinary laboratory curriculum has been designed using a suite of analytical chemistry techniques to study biomaterials derived from an inexpensive source such as the tomato fruit. A logical progression of research-inspired laboratory modules serves to "tour" the macroscopic characteristics of the fruit and the…

Garrett, Teresa A.; Rose, Rebecca L.; Bell, Sidney M. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2013
In this laboratory module, introductory biochemistry students are exposed to two-dimensional [superscript 1]H-nuclear magnetic resonance of glycerophospholipids (GPLs). Working in groups of three, students enzymatically synthesized and purified a variety of 2-acyl lyso GPLs. The structure of the 2-acyl lyso GPL was verified using [superscript…

Kim, Heejoo; Chacko, Priya; Zhao, Jinhui; Montclare, Jin Kim – Journal of Chemical Education, 2014
As part of an outreach program, we integrated chemistry apps with blogging to enhance the learning experience of students in and outside the classroom. Our outreach program involved college mentors who participated in the development and implementation of chemistry lessons alongside the classroom teacher. Three technology-rich modules that focused…
