Mazza, R. J.; Washbourn, D. H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Describes a semi-automatic viscometer which incorporates a microprocessor system and uses optoelectronics to detect flow of liquid through the capillary, flow time being displayed on a timer with accuracy of 0.01 second. The system could be made fully automatic with an additional microprocessor circuit and inclusion of a pump. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Electronics

Bramwell, Fitzgerald B.; Bramwell, Fitzgerald – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Describes modification of a gas viscometer to produce a low cost instrument with high precision and safe design. Three tungsten electrodes are mounted in the viscometer using graded glass seals and a ball trap is inserted between mercury reservoir and all external stopcocks. Also describes modifications in experimental procedures. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education

Ewing, Galen W., Ed.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Described is a project SIINC (Scientific Instrumentation Information Network and Curriculum), a three year pilot program to test the feasibility of developing a computer-based system for accessing information vital to users of chemical instrumentation. Project SIINC fills the gap between conventional sources of instrumental information and…
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Science

Elin, Ronald J. – Science, 1980
Describes recent developments in instrumentation for clinical chemistry in the areas of general chemistry, immunoassays, urinalysis, electrophoresis, chromatography, and trace metal analyses. (CS)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Clinical Diagnosis, Instrumentation, Laboratories

LeBlanc, Jacqueline; Frankel, Saundra – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1980
Describes the continuing education program for clinical chemistry instrumentation training established at The College of Staten Island, New York. A course consisting of 14 sessions is outlined and discussed. (CS)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Course Descriptions, Instrumentation

Panijpan, Bhinyo – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Spectroscopic studies on solutions and x-ray diffraction work on crystals lead to the conclusion that the Metrogen of the pyrimidine ring is preferentially protonated. The correct monoprotonated structures of thiamine and its 4-amino-pyrimidine synthetic precursor are presented. (BT)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Chemical Analysis, Chemical Nomenclature, Chemistry

Manche, Emanuel P. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Following a delineation of thermoluminescence from a historical perspective and a qualitative description of the process, a treatment of the kinetic process based on a simple model is presented. This treatment model is adequate for the purpose of identifying the essential requirements in instrument design. (BT)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, Instrumentation, Kinetics

Connelly, F. Michael; And Others – Science Teacher, 1977
Describes the Teacher Orientation to Science Instruction (TOTSI) instrument, which comprises a set of statements on eight characteristics of science teaching. TOTSI evaluates teacher assumptions to indicate what type of curriculum best suits the teacher's abilities and preferences. (MLH)
Descriptors: Curriculum, Instruction, Instrumentation, Measurement Instruments

Young, J. P.; And Others – Analytical Chemistry, 1989
Discussed is an analytical technique that uses photons from lasers to resonantly excite an electron from some initial state of a gaseous atom through various excited states of the atom or molecule. Described are the apparatus, some analytical applications, and the precision and accuracy of the technique. Lists 26 references. (CW)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education

Warner, Steven A. – Analytical Chemistry, 1990
Presented are system concepts with examples of various vendor approaches for implementing laboratory local area networks. (CW)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Networks

Dart, S. Leonard – American Journal of Physics, 1975
Describes techniques and equipment intended to both improve laboratory measurements and also form a background for more advanced work by introducing the concepts of electronic and digital circuits. (GS)
Descriptors: College Science, Electronic Equipment, Electronics, Higher Education

Cassidy, Robert F., Jr.; Schuerch, Conrad – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, Chromatography, College Science

Ricci, Robert W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1974
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computer Programs, Instructional Materials
American Chemical Society, Washington, DC. – 1984
A questionnaire was mailed to 50 major chemistry departments, 112 smaller chemistry departments, and 25 chemical engineering (CE) departments. The survey (included in an appendix) consists of a series of questions on two broad subjects--the current inventory at the surveyed institutions and the needs for instrumentation. Responses were received…

Stedman, Donald H.; Meyers, Philip A. – BioScience, 1974
Discusses advances made in chemical analysis instrumentation used in environmental monitoring. This first of two articles is concerned with analytical instrumentation in which detection and dispersion depend ultimately on the properties of gaseous molecules. (JR)
