Kauffman, George B.; And Others – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1986
The use of sodium acetate solution to show supersaturation is a favorite among lecture demonstrations. However, careful adjustment of the solute-to-water ratio must be made to attain the most spectacular effect--complete solidification of the solution. Procedures to accomplish this are provided and discussed. (JN)

Schwartz, A. Truman; Kauffman, George B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Describes medieval alchemical experiments that can be reenacted in the undergraduate laboratory. (MLH)

Kauffman, George B.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Describes an experiment in which several metallo complexes with different central atoms are prepared. Background information on these compounds is provided, including requirements for their formation, preparation methods, and comments on their general properties and analysis. (JN)

Kauffman, George B.; Myers, Robin D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Provides historical background on Pasteur's resolution of an optically active compound, and describes an undergraduate laboratory experiment in which optically active compounds are separated. (MLH)

Schwartz, A. Truman; Kauffman, George B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Describes a number of undergraduate laboratory experiments that illustrate the science of alchemy as it was historically practiced. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education

Kauffman, George B.; Ebner, Ronald D. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1985
Describes a demonstration in which gaseous ammonia and hydrochloric acid are used to illustrate rates of diffusion (Graham's Law). Simple equipment needed for the demonstration include a long tube, rubber stoppes, and cotton. Two related demonstrations are also explained. (DH)

Kauffman, George B.; Chooljian, Steven H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
In this experiment, the student duplicates the experiment reported by Wohler in 1828. (BB)

Kauffman, George B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1987
Proposes that preparative chemistry is an important and integral part of chemistry as a whole, and an excellent way to introduce students to descriptive chemistry. Provides an outline for students to follow for converting and transforming salts. Suggests a set of general guidelines for studying anion and cation transformations. (TW)
