A well organized school security program is one solution to controlling the increase in school disruption. However, a long-range security program requires more than enforcing regulations. The role of school security is to influence the development of an educational climate where the classroom atmosphere is peaceful. The responsibilities of security officers should emphasize the importance of preventive security measures. For this purpose, a teamwork approach is necessary. Also, security officers should strengthen ties with students, administrators, school staff, and the community. In dealing with students, school security officers have to understand the students' point of view. In order for security measures to be effective, the security force and the administration need to agree on job descriptions and policy goals for the security program. Parents and community representatives must be convinced of the need for school security. In addition to daily actions for school security, a contingency plan for disruption is needed. This plan should include provisions for building safety and security; personal safety and security; administrative control of operations; emergency communications systems; and police involvement.
