Adolescent Risk Behavior and Experiences with Flow
Bettencourt, Kristen
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
This study explored the relationship between adolescent risk behavior and flow, a state of optimal experience characterized by a spontaneous and fluid, yet deeply focused state of awareness (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996). The purpose of the study was to better understand adolescent risk taking, as well as how it may interact with experiences of flow. Adolescent experiences with various risk behaviors as well as their experiences with flow were assessed through an online survey. Measures included the Swedish Flow Proneness Questionnaire and the Bettencourt Adolescent Risk Questionnaire. Data analysis included bivariate correlations and a stepwise linear regression. Results showed a significant positive correlation between having texted, emailed, or used social media while driving, and flow, as well as a significant negative correlation between the following behaviors and flow: having shoplifted or otherwise stolen something, having smoked a cigarette or consumed other tobacco products, having consumed alcohol, and having cheated on a test or academic assignment. This study aimed to explore the possibility of harnessing both the adolescent affinity for risk and the power of flow experiences to support adolescents in living deeply satisfying, meaningful, and exciting lives in safe, adaptive, constructive ways.
