Tarquinio, Nancy; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1990
Investigated newborns' responses to decreased sound pressure level (SPL) by means of a localized head turning habituation procedure. Findings, which demonstrated recovery of neonatal head turning to decreased SPL, were inconsistent with the selective receptor adaptation model. (RH)

Hofstadter, Maura; Reznick, J. Steven – Child Development, 1996
Assessed delayed-response performance in 120 infants 7, 9, and 11 months old. Correct response was identified as either retrieval of a hidden object or a gaze toward its location. Performance improved with age, was above chance for each age group in each condition, and was more often correct for gaze response, suggesting a significant effect of…

McGuire, Iris; Turkewitz, Gerald – Child Development, 1978
The relationship between visual stimulus intensity and finger movements was examined in infants ranging in age from 10 to 15 weeks and from 20 to 25 weeks. Infants were shown a cone that varied in size, brightness, and distance from them. (Author/JMB)

Purpose of this experiemnt was to systematically investigate the behavioral effects of vertical rocking at different frequencies up to 1.5 Hz. (Authors/CB)

Watson, John S.; Ramey, Craig T. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1972
Data is from a short-term longitudinal study conducted at the Institute of Human Development which involved presenting two weeks of a special contingency experience to infants between their eighth and tenth weeks. (Authors/MB)

Simner, Marvin L. – Developmental Psychology, 1971
A series of investigations were conducted to determine whether reflexive crying occurs in newborns and to define the parameters that control his behavior. (NH)

Ashmead, Daniel H.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1980
To determine whether heart rate increase can be attributed to increased sucking amplitude for sweeter fluids, sucking and heart rate of 20 full-term infants were studied. (MP)

Kagan, Jerome – Child Development, 1997
Notes that 4-month olds who show a low threshold to become distressed and motorically aroused to unfamiliar stimuli are more likely than others to become fearful and subdued during early childhood, while infants who show a high arousal threshold are more likely to become bold and sociable. Considers implications for psychopathology and relation…

Tellinghuisen, Donald J.; Oakes, Lisa M. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1997
Two experiments investigated the role of distractor characteristics and type of object-directed attention on 7- and 10-month-old infants' distraction latencies during object exploration. Found that infants took longer to turn toward distractors during focused object-directed attention than when engaged in more casual attention. They exhibited…

Poulson, Claire L.; Kymissis, Effie – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1988
Effects of modeling and contingent praise on infant's motor response topographies were experimentally analyzed. Three male 10-month-olds showed systematic increases in targeted training and probe response topographies after introduction of the modeling and praise treatment procedure. Thus generalized imitation with infants was demonstrated. (RH)

Bloom, Kathleen; Esposito, Anita – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1975
Presents two studies which investigated the effects of social stimulation on infant's vocalization rates. Experiment I focused on response-contingent and response-independent social stimulation. Experiment II focused on continuous or omitted social stimulation. In both studies, social stimulation increased vocalization and the rate of responding…

Bloom, Kathleen; And Others – 1974
This research study investigated the hypothesis that noncontingent social stimulation can elicit infant vocal sounds. The investigation involved an examination of both the course of social elicitation and the nature of the social releasing stimulus. Three experimental conditions were designed to measure: (1) the changes in vocalization rate during…
