Lazarton, Anne – TESOL Quarterly, 2000
Using a survey of 7-years' work in four primary journals, this article reports trends in research methodologies. Despite theoretical discussion suggesting the need for multiple approaches to empirical inquiry, findings indicate that the overwhelming majority of research remains within quantitative paradigms. (Author/VWL)

Ortega, Lourdes – Modern Language Journal, 2005
In this article, I argue for adopting an ethical lens that interrogates our ends and purposes when generating research on second language learning and teaching, in light of concerns surrounding questions about the uses and users of our work. Such an ethical lens would help us transform our methodological and epistemological debates and would also…

Birdsong, David – 1988
In response to problems in classifying grammaticality judgments in linguistic theory, a psychological model of speakers' performance on grammaticality judgment tasks is presented. The model departs significantly from notions of metalinguistic performance outlined in previous research, and is derived principally from recent work in category theory.…

Rauch, Irmengard – 1976
This paper introduces the reader to a brief history of the focus of linguistic method from prehistoric times, through the Classical era, the Middle Ages, to the present. The scientific orientation of linguistic method is exploited; a set of specific principles is found to unify most of today's diverse methods. The success of linguistics is…

Greenbaum, Sidney – Linguistics, 1977
To ensure reliable language data for research there is a need for experiments eliciting acceptability judgments. Experimental data are discussed to show that evaluation of a sentence may be affected by the sentence with which it is paired. Sentences with similar deviances should be presented as a set for evaluation. (CHK)

Long, Donna Reseigh – Foreign Language Annals, 1986
Asserts that many aspects of the second-language learning and teaching process are not amenable to experimentation at the present time and that case studies, that is, studies of the individual learner, teacher, or classroom, are valuable as precursors to experimentation. (Author/SED)

Wike, Edward L.; Church, James D. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Clark's arguments for treating language materials as random rather than fixed effects are examined, and the problems with random effects designs and approximate statistical tests (quasi F-ratios) are reviewed. It is suggested that researchers use fixed factors. (Author/RM)
