Rossi, Sheila; Wittrock, M. C. – Child Development, 1971
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cluster Grouping, Developmental Psychology, Intellectual Development
Walen, Susan R. – J Verb Learning Verb Behav, 1970
The learning and retention performances of children and adults were compared on free and serialized reproductions of meaningful words. Although the children took longer than the adults to reach the learning criterion, and short-term retention was equivalent for both groups, the children displayed a superior serial recall at 7-day retention.…

Rabinowitz, Mitchell; Mandler, Jean M. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1983
Two experiments explored the differential effects of two kinds of organization (taxonomic and schematic) on retrieval of information. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Classification, Cluster Grouping, College Students, Higher Education

McClinton, Sandra L. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1981
Children at three age levels (four-, six-, and eight-year-olds) were asked a series of class inclusion questions presented verbally, visually, and kinesthetically. Analysis of correctness of reasons showed main effects of age and of condition. (Author/GK)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Early Childhood Education, Kinesthetic Methods, Learning Processes
Black, John B.; Bower, Gordon H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Memory representations of statements from a story were predicted to cluster into separate episode chunks in memory. It was shown that the recall of episode depends on the length of that episode, but not on the lengths of other episodes. The chunking idea was confirmed. (SW)
Descriptors: Discourse Analysis, Language Research, Memory, Prose
Baggett, Patricia – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
A technique was devised for constructing a text story which subjects agreed matched the dialogueless movie "The Red Balloon" in episodic structure. It relies partly on subjects judging where episodes and their components were located in the stories. Differences in content in movie and text recall are discussed. (SW)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Discourse Analysis, Films, Language Research

Alegria, Jesus; Pignot, Elisabeth – Child Development, 1979
Experiment 1 showed that four-year-old children memorized a list of non-rhyming items better than a list of rhyming ones. In Experiment 2, bilingual children learned a list of items which had rhyming names in one language and non-rhyming names in the other. Results showed better performance on the non-rhyming items. (JMB)
Descriptors: Bilingual Students, Cognitive Processes, Foreign Countries, Mediation Theory
Black, John B.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Reports on research on point of view and its effect on reading processes. (AM)
Descriptors: Connected Discourse, Literary Perspective, Memory, Psychological Studies
Baggett, Patricia – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
The nature of the memory representation of two types of information in picture stories is examined: surface information, arising directly from pictures, and conceptual information, inferred from connecting pictures into a story. (CHK)

Brodie, Delbert A.; Prytulak, Lubomir S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
The hypothesis that free recall curves reflecting effects of serial position, presentation time and delay of recall are attributable to subjects' pattern of rehearsal was explored. Experiments varied the patterns of rehearsal to examine the effects on recall. (CHK)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Learning Processes, Memorization, Memory
Healy, Alice F. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Short-term retention of temporal and spatial order information were compared using the distractor paradigm. Use of phonemic coding and coding of information about temporal-spatial patterns were interrupted to observe subject's reaction and ability to recall. (CHK)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Learning Processes, Memory, Performance Tests
Slamecka, Norman J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Two experiments tested for effects of intralist cues upon recognition probability. Categorized and random lists were each tested, with targets appearing with zero, one or three intralist cues. Experiments showed substantial effects of trials and list type, but not of intralist context. (CHK)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Context Clues, Cues, Language Processing
Extraversion, neuroticism and verbal reasoning ability as determinants of paired associates learning

Allsopp, J. F.; Eysenck, H. J. – British Journal of Psychology, 1975
Predictions based on theories of verbal learning proposed by Spence and Eysenck were compared by using a noncompetitive list of paired-associates formed from seven synonym pairs, and a competitive list formed by pairing each of the seven S words with a R word with which it was not synonymous. (Editor)

Underwood, Benton J.; Lund, Arnold M. – 1980
In simultaneous learning two verbal lists are interlaced for study, with each tested separately. In the present experiments simultaneous learning was used as a means of determining the conditions under which study time or learning resources might be reallocated between lists. One of the lists was called the standard list and remained constant…

Robinson, John A.; Bennink, Carl D. – 1977
A study was conducted to provide an assessment of the general efficiency of working memory in relation to level of field articulation. The task required a subject to retain a series of digits for subsequent report while performing a semantic modification of a target phrase. The working memory hypothesis predicts that the joint impact of high…
