Knowledge Is Power: The Issue of Censorship in Middle Grades Literacy Instruction
Whitney, Jennifer D.
Online Submission
Book challenges have become more and more frequent in recent years. In particular, those books that address issues most relevant to preteens and teenagers seem to be the object of many challenges. Many of the hundreds of challenged works represent literary classics and high-quality writing for young audiences. Teachers, administrators and other school officials need to prepare and inform themselves about the most effective ways to respond to these challenges. This paper also includes a detailed bibliography of several challenged works appropriate for use in a middle grades curriculum, along with implications for classroom use.
