Bell, Diane M.; And Others – 1990
A study investigated the effect of repeated readings of the same connected text on students' attitude toward reading and their reading fluency, determined by accuracy and speed. Forty-two subjects (25 second-grade and 17 third-grade students) from 2 self-contained classrooms in rural Ohio participated in the study. The pretest-posttest control…

Lueck, Amanda Hall; Bailey, Ian L.; Greer, Robert B.; Tuan, Kuang Mon; Bailey, Valerie M.; Dornbusch, Helen G. – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 2003
Six fourth-graders with low vision were asked to read unrelated words and continuous text ranging in print size. Participants read faster when they read text aloud than when they read nonrelated words. Their reading speeds decreased as the print sizes decreased. Methods to maximize reading efficiency are discussed. (Contains references.) (CR)

Scott, Jack; And Others – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1990
The paper describes procedures for reducing reading errors and building oral reading fluency by having students read along with audiotapes of passages recorded at rates somewhat faster than the learner's current performance level. Steps involved in this challenging reading method include assessment, daily timings, error correction, and rate…

Rasinski, Timothy V.; And Others – 1992
A study tested the effects of an approach for improving reading fluency on the general reading and fluency development of second-grade students in regular classrooms. Subjects were from two elementary schools in a large, urban, ethnically diverse school district. There were 30 students in 2 classrooms in a school located in a working class…

Rasinski, Timothy V. – 1990
A study sought to create and pilot a reasonable method for estimating reading rate by grade level and level of reading proficiency within grade level, and to identify reasonable estimates of reading rate at independent, instructional, and frustration levels of reading. Data were elicited from 66 third grade and 64 fifth grade students attending…

Bailey, Ian L.; Lueck, Amanda Hall; Greer, Robert B.; Tuan, Kuang Mon; Bailey, Valerie M.; Dornbusch, Helen G. – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 2003
This article presents conceptual models of relationships between print size and reading speed and preferred viewing distances. These models illustrate how various factors can influence reading behaviors and influence decisions about the optimal angular size of print and resolution reserve. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

Allen, Diane D. – 1988
A study examined oral and silent reading rates at various levels of difficulty to establish criterion rates for fluent reading at the fourth grade level. Subjects, 27 male and 45 female students from 6 classes in 3 public schools in central Oklahoma who read at an average of more than one year above grade placement, had their oral and silent…

Brennan, Patricia A.; Leidig, Cheri Petras; Picicco, Giovanna G. – 2001
This report describes a program for improving reading fluency in the classroom. The researchers worked with their students to increase their word recognition rate and accuracy within a text. The emphasis was on their ability to appropriately and consistently model reading with expression and intonation. The targeted population consisted of first…
