The Art of Public Narrative: Teaching Students How to Construct Memorable Anecdotes

In communication courses, instructors frequently define the term "anecdote," explore the various types of anecdotes, and then encourage students to use anecdotes in their speeches. However, instructors do not often spend time teaching students "how" to construct memorable anecdotes. As a result, many students present weak anecdotes or choose not to use anecdotes at all. Given the importance of anecdotes in communication, the author introduces a conceptual framework that will help instructors expand their discussion of the anecdote-creation process. This framework relies on a concept that he calls a "moment"--a snapshot in time that invites listeners to experience a particular situation. Think of a "moment" as a single photograph within a frame. When speakers verbally recreate a particular photograph, they should describe only what they "see" in the still image in their mind. Although speakers may be tempted to wander outside the periphery, they must stay within the frame at all times. Once speakers identify an important "moment," they can begin to construct an anecdote around it. The anecdote-creation process involves four interrelated elements: (1) the setting; (2) the characters; (3) the plot; and (4) the moral. While speakers should leverage all four elements, they need not fully build out every element. Instead, they should focus on the elements that they find most useful. (Contains 8 notes.)
