Understanding the Influence of Communication by Higher Education Institution Leadership on Front-Line Staff's Acceptance of an ERP Implementation
Karen J. Beckett
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This study attempts to understand the perception of a specific group of stakeholders, front-line staff, by their response to the communication received during an enterprise resource system (ERP) implementation process. This study also aims to identify how communications contributed to resistance or acceptance of the enterprise system once the ERP is launched. Higher education institutions are increasingly implementing ERP systems to replace their home grown or single-function systems. Communication has been found to be a key factor in whether the ERP implementation is successful or unsuccessful. Communication has been shown to be an integral piece of a well-planned change management process. Specifically, well thought-out, and targeted communications can support the change leading to acceptance of a new enterprise resource system. Front-line staff, as the main users of the ERP are a key population that needs to be communicated with throughout the implementation. This case study showed how lack of intentionality in communicating with front-line staff can negatively affect their perception of the ERP implementation and potentially the system itself. The results of this case study add to the literature that supports earlier findings that communication does foster either acceptance or resistance to an ERP system. The responses of the participants exemplify how inconsistent messaging and different methods of communication trigger different responses to the ERP implementation.
