Evaluating the Core for 21st Century Effectiveness: A Case Study
Mary Katherine Flickner
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the general studies program at Dallas Baptist University (DBU) for its effectiveness in developing undergraduate students for life and leadership in the 21st century. Researchers and practitioners in the higher education sector have pointed to massive disruptions in life and work caused by globalization, technological advances, and the need to increase equitable access to their institutions. These disruptions pressure institutions to provide efficient and effective academic programs that equip students with the competencies needed in a changing world. The current study used a qualitative case-study methodology to evaluate the design of DBU's general studies program and student perceptions of their experiences. Detweiler's (2021) six liberal arts learning experiences were used as the basis for evaluation. The data indicated that DBU's general studies program does provide effective and identifiable learning experiences for undergraduate students. The data further indicated that program design is important, but professors have an outsized effect on student perceptions of value and development of competencies best suited to 21st century contexts.
