Mentorships for Gifted Students.
Mosely, Victoria A.; Todd, Earl W.
A mentorship program in the Cleveland Public Schools has provided services to 79 gifted disadvantaged high school juniors during a 3-year period. The program was designed to expand the student's understanding of career options through association with a skilled mentor with similar career interests. Mentors worked individually with students with the assistance of the project coordinator and supervisor. Interactions between mentor and student were varied and included tours and visits to the community, interviews with employers, and library research. The project's three phases included initiation, implementation, and evaluation. Excerpts from case study reports showed the value and kinds of mentorship experiences fulfilling major program objectives. Evaluation results were generally favorable from students, mentors, and parents. Suggestions were made for program improvement, including greater delineation of roles and responsibilities for each party. Among appended material are a sample list of mentor-student experiences, sample forms, and several case studies. (CL)
