Each year, a million new illiterates are being added to the pool of 50 million illiterates in Pakistan. An adult and continuing education program is reviewed. Objectives and needs, program implementation, curriculum requirements, and the role of international cooperation are topics considered. (MW)

Reviewing the activities of the Literacy Corps in Iran, the article examines the national service organization which has done much to combat illiteracy in rural areas and lower the national rate of illiteracy. (MW)

India's national adult education program is being planned to bring literacy to its 310 million adult illiterates. The first stage is projected to cover 100 million persons in the 15-35 age group by 1983-84. Problems include motivating institutions and individuals to participate and providing for adequate funding. (MF)
