Clarkson, Philip C. – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 1991
Error frequency and language competence of bilingual grade 6 students were analyzed to determine the effect of language comprehension in errors made in solving mathematical word problems. Results provide support for the linkage of comprehension errors to measures of language competency. (29 references) (MDH)

Felton, Thomas A., Jr. – Gifted Education International, 1998
Describes a curriculum design approach, "the ill-structured problem," based on real life situations, that was used for a summer gifted foreign language program for fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Chesapeake Public Schools, Virginia. Elements of problem-based learning are described, including the problem comes first, the problem is…

Calfee, Robert – 1988
Predicated on the belief that current methods for assessing literacy give policymakers too narrow a view of performance and should be augmented by the informed professional judgment of classroom teachers, this report appraises how well schools in the United States are meeting the goal of a literate populace. The report seeks to improve…

Gorrell, John Jeffrey – 1981
The purpose of this educational research project is to assess whether teachers actually encourage and foster (invite) their elementary students to solve problems. Teacher invitations are verbal and nonverbal messages sent to students either intentionally or unintentionally. Teacher invitations are significant because they indicate the teacher's…

Talton, Carolyn Flanagan – 1973
The purpose of this study was to determine if selected mental, mathematical, reading, and personality assessments of sixth-grade pupils could predict high achievers in mathematical verbal problem solving. The subjects were 112 sixth graders, 56 classified as high achievers in mathematical verbal problem solving and 56 classified as low achievers…

De Francisco, Carrie; Burns, Marilyn – 2002
This book contains a collection of fraction lessons that support curriculum and instruction. The goals of the lessons are to give all students the chance to: (1) extend their understanding of the place value system to include decimals; (2) learn how decimals relate to fractions; (3) represent, read, and interpret decimal numerals; (4) compare…

Dougherty, Barbara J. – 2002
This book introduces journal-writing prompts in mathematics for grades 5-6. Content prompts, attitudinal or affective prompts, and process prompts are presented. Each of the content prompts relates or connects topics within and outside of mathematics, targeting important or meaningful concepts and skills. The content prompts also provide…

Kalchman, Mindy; Katz, Steven – 1999
The tension between providing opportunities for mathematical understandings and the need to teach widely-used notations and algorithms is explained in terms of a folk pedagogical conflict. Divergent pedagogical practices are shown to follow from different mental and epistemological assumptions and manifest themselves in equally divergent student…

North Carolina State Dept. of Public Instruction, Raleigh. – 1999
This profile is designed as a recording sheet for monitoring an individual student's progress throughout the school year. Sixth grade assessment materials and the "Strategies for Instruction in Mathematics" suggest tasks and questions that can be used for on-going and summative assessment. Directions for use and descriptions of levels of…

Wheeler, Steve; Waite, S. J.; Bromfield, C. – Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 2002
Reports on a pilot study that investigated the creative impact of information and communication technology (ICT) in a grade 6 class in England. Presents a model of creativity that includes problem solving, creative cognition, and social interaction; and discusses the creation of personal Web pages. (Author/LRW)

Flick, Lawrence B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
The question of how children solve force and motion problems in computer simulations without explicit knowledge of the underlying physics was investigated. Keystroke sequences made by children were saved and analyzed, and children were interviewed to understand their perception of the relationship between keyboard input and on-screen action. (CW)

Markovits, Zvia; And Others – Arithmetic Teacher, 1989
The performance of sixth and seventh graders on a variety of tasks involving estimation and reasonableness of results were studied. Also examined was the effect of a short unit of activities on these two topics. Correct answers approximately doubled after instruction. (MNS)

Stipek, Deborah J.; Kowalski, Patricia S. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1989
A study involving 110 fifth- and sixth-graders (51 male and 59 female), classified as low or high in effort orientation, assessed the effects of task- versus performance-oriented instructions on a computer-assisted test programed to ensure that all examinees failed to solve all problems. Problem-solving strategy analyses were preformed. (TJH)

Adams, Stephen T.; Disessa, Andrea A. – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 1991
This study described ways that sixth grade students invented strategies for working out difficult physics problems while using a motion program in the computer environment "Boxer." Strategies became a communal classroom resource and ground rules for their use were negotiated with the teacher. (MDH)

Cardelle-Elawar, Maria – Elementary School Journal, 1990
Describes a study of the effect of teachers' verbal feedback on the ability of bilingual sixth graders to solve mathematical word problems. Treatment was based on Mayer's model of problem solving. Results indicated that theory-based feedback targeted to bilingual students' individual and class needs improved student mathematics performance. (GH)
