Georgiou, George K.; Torppa, Minna; Manolitsis, George; Lyytinen, Heikki; Parrila, Rauno – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2012
We examined the longitudinal predictors of nonword decoding, reading fluency, and spelling in three languages that vary in orthographic depth: Finnish, Greek, and English. Eighty-two English-speaking, 70 Greek, and 88 Finnish children were followed from the age of 5.5 years old until Grade 2. Prior to any reading instruction, they were…

Brennan, Fiona; Ireson, Judith – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1997
Evaluates a phonological awareness program by studying 38 kindergarten children: the experimental class received a Danish training program of metalinguistic games and exercises, and two control classes used either a kindergarten reading/writing program or a normal program. Shows that children in the special programs had greater gains in reading…

Roberts, Kathleen T.; Ehri, Linnea C. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1983
Skilled and less skilled beginning readers (n=54) were taught to read and define 10 printed pseudowords. Post-tests revealed that experimentals retaining spellings in memory as orthographic images remembered spellings better than controls who received comparable training without the memory component. (PN)

Nation, Kate; Hulme, Charles – Reading Research Quarterly, 1997
Gives children (ages 5+ to 9+) four tests of phonological skill to investigate relationships between these measures and their predictive relationship with reading and spelling ability. Finds performance at phonemic segmentation, rhyme sound categorization, and alliteration sound categorization improved with age, but all groups performed onset-rime…

Hatcher, Peter J.; Goetz, Kristina; Snowling, Margaret J.; Hulme, Charles; Gibbs, Simon; Smith, Glynnis – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
Background: It is widely recognized that effective interventions for poor reading involve training in phoneme awareness and letter-sound knowledge, linked in the context of reading books. From the applied perspective, it is important to gather data on the effectiveness of different forms of implementation of literacy support within this framework.…

Schneider, Wolfgang; Ennemoser, Marco; Roth, Ellen; Kuspert, Petra – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1999
A study examined effects of phonological awareness training on 191 German kindergartners. Comparisons of children at risk with average and advanced children revealed that training gains were similar for all of these groups. Furthermore, training had comparable long-term effects on reading and spelling in grades 1 and 2 for each group. (Author/CR)

Ferroli, Lou; Krajenta, Marilyn – NABE: The Journal of the National Association for Bilingual Education, 1990
A test that assessed student developmental stage in spelling 12 Spanish words was administered along with measures of reading/language skills to 80 children in grades K-2 in a transitional bilingual program. The developmental spelling test was easy to administer and high in internal consistency and interrater reliability. As in English versions,…

Mahony, Diana L.; Mann, Virginia A. – 1991
This study uses linguistic humor to show that awareness of only those linguistic units transcribed by the orthography bear a special relation to early reading success. The study is decribed following a review of the literature and a discussion of advantages and problems associated with the use of humor appreciation as a probe of children's…

Torneus, Margit – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
The causal relationship between metaphonological skills (sound blending and segmentation) and reading/spelling was investigated in two studies of first graders. One tested causal models using data from a longitudinal study of 46 dyslexics and 44 control children. The other studied the effects of metaphonological training versus general language…

Vadasy, Patricia F.; Jenkins, Joseph R.; Antil, Lawrence R.; Wayne, Susan K.; O'Connor, Rollanda E. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1997
Twenty at-risk first graders received 30 minutes of individual instruction from community tutors four days a week for up to 23 weeks. Subjects outperformed the control group on all reading, decoding, spelling and segmenting, and writing measures. Tutors who implemented the program with a high degree of fidelity achieved significant effect sizes in…

Foorman, Barbara R.; Liberman, Dov – 1988
Investigating how good and poor readers process words, a study examined the spelling and reading processes of 80 middle-class first grade students from three schools in Houston, Texas, 40 who were receiving whole word instruction, and 40 receiving phonics instruction. Based on scores from the Gates-McGinitie Reading Test, Basic R (administered in…

Ho, Wai Ching; And Others – 1972
Third year results (Grade 2) are reported for the Initial Teaching Alphabet (i.t.a.) study, selected as an experimental reading medium because its symbol-sound consistency makes learning to read a simpler task. Instruction was begun at the kindergarten level. The study investigated whether the i.t.a. program helps improve the reading skills of the…

Badian, Nathlie A. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1998
Two cohorts of preschool children (n=238) were followed to determine whether tests of phonological awareness, orthographic processing, and serial-naming speed, added to a preschool battery, would improve prediction of reading. The major predictors of first-grade reading and spelling were preschool letter-naming and sentence memory for both…
