Sophian, Catherine – Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2004
While mathematics instruction for very young children needs to be age-appropriate in format and content, it also needs to prepare children conceptually for the kinds of mathematics learning that will be expected of them in future years. This perspective, informed by the work of Russian psychologists and educators on a measurement-based approach to…

National Center for Education Research, 2008
A variety of preschool curricula is available and in widespread use, however, there is a lack of evidence from rigorous evaluations regarding the effects of these curricula on children's school readiness. The lack of such information is important as early childhood center-based programs have been a major, sometimes the sole, component of a number…

Birnbaum, Dana W.; Chemelski, Bruce E. – Sex Roles, 1984
Examination of preschoolers' stereotypes about sex differences in emotionality found that although this group consistently associated fear with females, gender attribution was situation-specific for anger and happiness. In explaining attributions, girls made greater use of sex-role and imagery categories than boys, and younger children gave more…

Anderson, Norman H.; Cuneo, Diane O. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1978
In eight experiments, judgments of rectangle area by five-year-olds followed a reliable adding rule: height + width. In collateral work, the children judged the amount of liquid in a glass by a height-only rule. Implications for the Piagetian theories of centration and compensation are drawn. (SJL)

Treiman, Rebecca; And Others – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1994
Three studies examined preschoolers' and kindergartners' learning of correspondences between phonemes and graphemes. Findings suggest that children use their knowledge of letter names and their phonological segmentation skills rather than memorizing these links in a rote, paired-associate manner. (Contains 26 references.) (Author/LB)
