States' Roles in Ensuring the Public Good Mission of Postsecondary Education
Tristan Denley
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v56 n2 p57-62 2024
At the beginning of the 21st century, higher education began to concentrate on leveling the playing field around admission. While this work is still unfolding, in the second decade of the last century, attention also began to be paid to identifying strategies that would improve student success and completion for all students, but especially for low-income, first generation, and minority students. More recently, this work has broadened, determining how higher education can intentionally enable students to make good on the promise of their credential across their lives. While a framework of evidence-based strategies has now been identified to improve student success at scale, very little is known about specifically what can be done to increase the social mobility impact of higher education. Through its statewide master plan, "Louisiana Prospers," Louisiana Higher Education is promoting implementation of proven student success strategies at a statewide scale to increase educational attainment and transform lives across the state.
