Schwartz, Martin F. – Speech Monographs, 1971
The results of this study indicate that the voiceless fricatives, /S/ and /Sh/, are reduced in intensity when spoken in a whispered vowel environment. In addition females may produce relatively weaker fricative intensity and intra-oral pressure. (Author)

Schwartz, Richard G.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1980
Various aspects of the phonological behavior of three normal speaking and three language disordered children (ages 2 to 4) matched on the basis of mean utterance length, sex, and cognitive development, were compared. While some individual variation was noted, no substantial group differences were revealed. (Author)

Boets, Bart; Wouters, Jan; van Wieringen, Astrid; Ghesquiere, Pol – Neuropsychologia, 2007
This study investigates whether the core bottleneck of literacy-impairment should be situated at the phonological level or at a more basic sensory level, as postulated by supporters of the auditory temporal processing theory. Phonological ability, speech perception and low-level auditory processing were assessed in a group of 5-year-old pre-school…

Johnson, Bonnie W.; Morris, Sherrill R. – Child Language Teaching and Therapy, 2007
This study examined the effect of lexical aspect and phonology on regular past-tense production. Data are presented from a group of 31 children, mean age 33 months, with typical language development. A case study of a 50-month-old child with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is also presented. Children imitated sentence pairs that included an…

McCleery, Joseph P.; Tully, Lisa; Slevc, L. Robert; Schreibman, Laura – Journal of Communication Disorders, 2006
While much attention has been given to documenting the language skills of verbal children with autism, the basic speech sound development patterns of severely language-impaired children with autism are unknown. Previous research has shown that certain consonants are generally produced earlier in development than other consonants, both in typically…

Broen, Patricia A.; And Others – 1989
The study examined the speech production strategies used by 4 young children (30- to 32-months-old) with cleft palate and velopharyngeal inadequacy during the early stages of phonological learning. All the children had had primary palatal surgery and were producing primarily single word utterances with a few 2- and 3-word phrases. Analysis of each…

Schaefer, Ronald P. – 1979
One English speaking child's phonological, semantic, and syntactical development from 15 to 21 months old is detailed in order to investigate the development of the mid vowel categories in English as reflected in spontaneous speech production. Prior research on this topic is summarized to reveal certain trends in the development of mid vowels.…

Gropper, George L.; Short, Jerry G. – 1969
Tryout results indicated that a speech and language program developed to improve employability of Corpsmen accomplished one of its two goals; that is, it taught Corpsment the concepts underlying the correct production of standard speech and language patterns. Mazza, P.; And Others – Journal of Phonetics, 1979
Reports on an experiment, conducted on ten children who misarticulated /s/, and designed to survey the effect of consonant context on misarticulation. Suggests that a context-sensitive model of phonetic performance is needed to account for variation in correct /s/ production. (Author/AM)

Pointon, Graham E. – Journal of Phonetics, 1980
Examines previously published experimental work on rhythm of spoken Spanish to establish whether or not Spanish is a "syllable-timed" language. Analyzes figures from the experiments and concludes that Spanish is neither stress-timed nor syllable-timed, displaying an antirhythmic pattern where each segment has a "standard duration" dependent on its…

Kail, Robert – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1997
Examined performance of over one hundred 6- to 10-year olds on three of each of the following tasks: processing speed, memory span, phonological skill, and articulation tasks assessing speed with which they could say familiar stimuli. Found that performance on span tasks was predicted by phonology and articulation tasks but not by age or…

Andruski, Jean E.; And Others – Cognition, 1994
Investigated whether college students' lexical access is affected by inherent acoustic variations that contribute to the identity of a phonetic feature. Results suggest that activation levels of words in the lexicon are graded, depending on the subphonetic shape of the input word, and that words phonologically similar to the test words are also…

Nihalani, Paroo – IRAL, 1993
Arguing that the question of social acceptability of allophonic variations is not a linguistic issue, but rather an issue of social identity, the discussion considers the speech chain, language as a social activity with its "norms" for social acceptability, and the specific context where Singaporean English is a marker of social…
