Tsukada, Kimiko – Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, 2006
This study examined Australian English (AE) and Thai-English bilingual (TE) speakers' ability to perceive word-final stops in their native and non-native languages. In the perception experiment, the TE listeners were able to discriminate stop contrasts differing only in place of articulation (/p/-/t/, /p/-/k/, /t/-/k/) in both English and Thai…

Davis, Katharine – 1990
A study investigated the acquisition of the phonemic feature/voice/ and, more specifically, voice onset time (VOT), in Hindi and English. Subjects were 20 monolingual children aged 2 to 6 from each of the 2 language groups, divided into 5 age groups, and 10 adults from each language group. Flash cards depicting minimally contrasting sets of words,…

Hardcastle, W. J. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
Reports on the effects of oral anaesthesia and auditory masking on various aspects of speech articulation as objectively quantified by electropalatography and sound spectrography. The results show changes in speech production caused by altered tactile and auditory feedback. (Author/TL)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Applied Linguistics, Articulation (Speech), Auditory Stimuli

Stevens, Kenneth N.; Blumstein, Sheila E. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
Acoustic properties of retroflex consonants were determined and interpreted in terms of acoustic theory. The results are considered in relation to a quantal theory, auditory property detectors, and theoretical notions of markedness. (Author/TL)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Articulation (Speech), Auditory Perception, Consonants
Lindfelt, Bengt – 1988
A study investigated the range of articulatory patterns in French in which occlusive consonants are followed by anterior vowels, and the resulting acoustic phenomena. Articulatory factors examined include the place of articulation of the occlusive consonant; the nature of contact during the occlusion; articulatory movements at the consonants'…

MANGE, CHARLES V. – 1959
THE INVESTIGATION STUDIED THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN (1) AUDITORY PERCEPTUAL ABILITIES AND ARTICULATION DEVELOPMENT AND (2) INVESTIGATED QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ASPECTS OF THESE ABILITIES AS SHOWN IN MENTALLY RETARDED AND NORMAL CHILDREN. THE STUDY INVOLVED MONTHLY TESTING OF ARTICULATION, PHONETIC DISCRIMINATION, AND PHONETIC SYNTHESIS…

IANNUCCI, DAVID; AND OTHERS
THE PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH WAS TO EXPLORE SOME OF THE VARIABLES THAT INFLUENCE INTRAINDIVIDUAL PHONETIC VARIATION IN CERTAIN ASPECTS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH SPEECH. FORTY COLLEGE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE EXPERIMENT. EACH PERFORMED TWO TASKS--(1) READING ALOUD WORDS (16 IN EACH OF FIVE CATEGORIES) FROM FLASHCARDS AS PART OF AN OSTENSIBLE LEARNING…

Tatham, M. A. A. – 1976
Variability is a term used to cover several types of phenomena in language sound patterns and in phonetic realization of those patterns. Variability refers to the fact that every repetition of an utterance is different, in amplitude, rate of delivery, formant frequencies, fundamental frequency or minor phase relationship changes across the sound…

Macken, Marlys A. – Linguistic Reporter, 1974
Designed to introduce the reader to the main works in normal (nondeviant) child phonology available in English, this annotated bibliography includes 2 general readers on child language and 27 books and articles with primary emphasis on phonology. The annotations, intended to be primarily descriptive, summarize: the design of each study; its…

Anderson, Stephen R. – 1970
This paper discusses ways in which the findings of phonetic research, especially in the area of articulatory phonetics, can be applied to language teaching. Phonetic descriptions of a relatively sophisticated sort are seen to be useful in language pedagogy in several ways: (1) by providing the student with a knowledge of what he's trying to do…

Minifie, Fred. D., Ed.; And Others – 1973
This book is written as a guide to the understanding of the processes involved in human speech communication. Ten authorities contributed material to provide an introduction to the physiological aspects of speech production and reception, the acoustical aspects of speech production and transmission, the psychophysics of sound reception, the nature…

Petersen, Niels Reinholt – Journal of Phonetics, 1978
Measurements of the fundamental frequencies of Danish vowels showed a positive correlation with tongue height. The fundamental frequency differences between high and low vowels were greatest in long vowels in stressed position, while short vowels in unstressed position differed to a much lesser degree. (Author/EJS)

Baars, Bernard J.; MacKay, Donald G. – Language in Society, 1978
Describes ongoing research into errors in spontaneous speech. (RM)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Discourse Analysis, Error Analysis (Language), Language Research

Neufeld, Gerald – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1978
A report on a study in which twenty adults were tested for their ability to reproduce accurately the articulatory and prosodic features of three languages in which they had received instruction. The goals were to partially test the "critical period for language learning" and the acquisition of a nativelike accent. (AMH)
