The authors have found written simulations to be a useful tool for evaluation of the clinical performance of doctor of pharmacy students. An example of a simulation and the scoring technique are presented, and use of the simulations as an educational/counseling tool are discussed. (JMD)

A study sought to identify student characteristics which account for academic achievement in clinical pharmacy courses. Preclinical grade point average was the best predictor. Evaluative studies of experiential education in pharmacy are reviewed, and a holistic approach to evaluation, including a model, is presented. Senior pharmacy students' perceptions prior to and after clinical experience were examined as they rated the occupations of BS pharmacist, PharmD pharmacist, physician, and nurse in one of three teaching hospitals in which the clinical course was conducted.
