Unknown College Retention and Degree Completion: Spring Starters at Four-Year Institutions

Although it has become increasing popular for first-time-in-college (FTIC) spring enrollment, there has been no empirical study on spring starters. Existing literature on delayed enrollment has not distinguished students by the semester in which they have matriculated. The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) does not collect data on spring starters, either. As a result, there is very little knowledge about students who matriculate to college in spring. In this study, the researchers sought to explore the first- and second-year persistence and degree completion of FTIC college students (18-19 years old upon college entry) starting in a spring semester (spring starters) at four-year institutions, relative to those who did not delay college enrollment (non-delayed fall starters) and those who delayed but enrolled in the following fall semester (delayed fall starters). They framed the study using Adelman's (2006) concept of academic momentum, which indicated that delayed enrollment negatively relates to persistence and degree completion. They analyzed the Beginning Postsecondary Students 2012:17 data by using the inverse-probability-weighted regression adjustment matching method. It contributes to the literature on delayed enrollment by comparing spring starters to both non-delayed and delayed fall starters. They also offer implications to better support spring starters at four-year institutions.
