A Meta-Analysis of the State of South Carolina End-of-Course Examination Outcomes in Algebra I and Biology I in Virtual Schools versus Traditional Schools
Denise Eubanks
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Converse University
In South Carolina, much focus was applied to the End of Course Examinations Program, or EOCEP. The EOCEP was used to measure mastery of academic standards in gateway courses. School effectiveness and student proficiency were two areas measured by individual student outcomes. All public schools were subject to EOCEP testing in South Carolina. Included were virtual schools, charter schools, traditional public schools, and any school funded by state tax dollars. The researcher reviewed and analyzed outcomes of the Algebra I and Biology I EOCEPs of students in the online learning environment pre- and post-COVID-19 compared to Algebra I and Biology I EOCEP outcomes in the traditional brick-and-mortar setting pre- and post-COVID-19. The researcher used a quantitative method to review the results systematically. An independent samples t-test was conducted to compare Algebra I and Biology I results between the virtual and traditional brick-and-mortar learning environments to determine differences in learner outcomes on the EOCEP. The researcher conducted a one-way ANCOVA test to compare pre- and post-COVID-19 results between the virtual and traditional brick-and-mortar learning environments. After completing the study, the researcher concluded there were differences between the virtual and traditional brick-and-mortar outcomes on the EOCEP in Algebra I, with virtual students scoring higher. Pre-and post-COVID-19 results also showed differences between the virtual and traditional brick-and-mortar outcomes. Virtual students scored higher overall post-COVID-19 than their traditional brick-and-mortar counterparts. The study results showed no differences in the EOCEP outcomes in Biology I between the virtual and traditional brick-and-mortar learning environments.
