Examining the Influence of Resilience of African American Graduates on Baccalaureate Degree Completion from Their Own Lived Experience
Eugene W. Harris
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Peter's University
Research on African American postsecondary academic achievement is well documented in the United States. Unfortunately, much of this research has centered around the lack of attainment of African American students in graduating with their baccalaureate degree. Researchers have also highlighted African American graduation rates particularly when compared to that of other minority groups of color as well as their Caucasian counterparts. This study concerned itself with the positive outcomes of African American students with respect to baccalaureate degree graduation by examining their resilience through their own lived experience at college. In attempting to gain further insights through the participants' own lived experience, this qualitative study was developed, and a phenomenological research design was deemed the most appropriate way to recount their experience.
