Influence of Organizational Socialization on Organizational Culture in Nontraditional Higher Education
Victoria Thomson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The purpose of this action research study was to examine the relationship between organizational socialization and organizational culture at a small institution of higher education. Various forms of data were collected using semi-structured interviews, surveys, collaborative work sessions, written feedback, and document analysis. Collaborative organizational socialization, particularly a process which elicits and addresses specific needs of the individuals involved, was shown to improve several metrics related to organizational culture over the course of the study. Organizational socialization is defined as the process by which newcomers become insiders, and organizational culture is defined as the set of shared practices, beliefs, and experiences of the members of an organization. In analyzing and presenting this data, this article builds on the body of extant work on organizational socialization and provides support for a collaborative socialization process in the pursuit of building positive and cohesive organizational culture.
