Hämäläinen, Jarmo; Landi, Nicole; Loberg, Otto; Lohvansuu, Kaisa; Pugh, Kenneth; Leppänen, Paavo H. T. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 2018
Development of reading skills has been shown to be tightly linked to phonological processing skills and to some extent to speech perception abilities. Although speech perception is also known to play a role in reading development, it is not clear which processes underlie this connection. Using event-related potentials (ERPs) we investigated the…

Viitaniemi, Eero – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1983
Reports the methodology used to measure the reading ability of third and fourth grade pupils in Finnish "comprehensive" schools in 1964 and 1979. Notes that 1979 students had significantly higher abilities in all areas measured, despite decreases in standard deviations. Interprets results in the light of acceleration theory. (SB)

Gronholm, Maj-Britt – Life and Education in Finland, 1990
Describes Finland's 15-minute method for improving reading skills. Parents are asked to read aloud to their kindergarteners 15 minutes daily, and children are also encouraged to read. Notes are sent between teachers and parents so teachers can provide support. Older students are encouraged to read and listen to younger ones. (SM)
