Parents of 536 children (ages 3-71 months) were shown to be remarkably good detectors of strabismus. Ninety-three percent of the parental identifications of strabismus were accurate while 99 percent of the nonstrabismic judgments were accurate. Reported is the case of a female infant whose early symptom of ophthalmoplegia (paralysis of one or more motor nerves in the eye) led to eventual diagnosis and treatment for maple syrup urine disease, a condition in which early dietary restrictions can prevent severe mental retardation and neurologic disability.
