Listening to the Pandemic: Hearing Higher Education through COVID-19
Sara Kathleen Gregory
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
The national shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on March 13th , 2020 caused education systems to close on an unprecedented scale. Many educators were not prepared to continue instructing online then, and students continue to grapple with the new reality of navigating online modalities now. Without face-to-face interaction, learning changed as students listened to instructors more than ever. This dissertation illuminates the overlooked sonic student experience before, during, and after that dramatic educational shift in 2020. This qualitative research explored the sounds of higher education that shape learning through post-intentional phenomenology (PIP). The theoretical framework of PIP allows for immersive data collection to amplify experiences that are constantly in the process of becoming. Specifically, this study asked six community college students what is heard in this evolution of higher education with a fixation on technological, educational, local, and national soundscapes. A soundscape is defined as any field of acoustic study. Through the burgeoning lens of sonic curriculum, i.e. the study of sound in educational settings, this dissertation combined interviews, journals, audio recordings, and soundmaps to visually depict student learning spaces. Soundscapes are presented in a series of Fantasias, or sonic works in progress combined with my own experiences, to provide future points of departure in sonic curriculum. Data analysis revealed student needs for clearer course design, increased accessibility, more engaging videos, careful use of silence, dynamic speaking, and overall improved connectivity. Listening to the pandemic has amplified issues already present in face-to-face classroom settings and sets the stage for future improvements.
