A Profile of Single Parents: A Descriptive Study of Single Parents Whose Children Were Born Out of Wedlock, Fiscal Year 1988.
Blom, Nancy S.
Births occurring each year in North Dakota of children born out of wedlock impacts the state both financially and in terms of the utilization of social services. The Department of Human Services provides financial assistance as well as services to parents of out of wedlock children in order to help the mother and/or father develop better parenting skills and gain self-sufficiency through education and employment. The goal of these services is to reduce child abuse and the need for economic assistance. This report was written to aid administrators in developing budgets submitted to the state legislature and for use in program planning at the state level and determining service needs at the county level. It describes a study which provided information in these categories: (1) general descriptive information; (2) description of mothers; (3) description of father; (4) characteristics of mothers by age; (5) characteristics of mothers by race; (6) characteristics of mothers by marital status; (7) characteristics of mothers by education; (8) characteristics of mothers by financial support; and (9) characteristics of mothers receiving or applying for Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Tables, graphs, and charts illustrate the study's findings throughout the document. (ABL)
