Adaptation to the retirement process by male sociologists and psychologists was studied for the age period 60-75 in the group of men who held academic positions in departments of psychology or sociology for at least 15 years immediately before the age of 60. Administrators in higher education disclosed life style patterns for the "retirement period" from ages 65 to 75. Two contrasting patterns are described-Transformers and Maintainers. These groups reported differences in boyhood experiences, attitudes toward retirement, and choices of activity after age 65. (Author)

Education has uses in every stage of the life cycle. Effective adult education should focus on two aspects--the instrumental and the expressive. Education after age 60 drops off but, in the future, participation in continuing education by people over 60 will increase. (Author)

A partial pension plan to encourage part-time employment of persons aged 60 to 70 could provide a more satisfying transition to full retirement. Age structure and the size of the labor force are discussed, along with conditions facilitating work and employment of older people and the effects of the rising cost of energy. (LBH)
