Gendered Career Expectations in Context: The Relevance of Normative and Comparative Reference Groups
Beckmann, Janina – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 2021
Although women are increasingly entering male-dominated careers, they remain strongly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations. While previous explanations emphasize the importance of individual preferences or family socialization, less is known about how the school context contributes to these…

Hencke, Juliane; Eck, Matthias; Sass, Justine; Hastedt, Dirk; Mejia-Rodriguez, Ana Maria – International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, 2022
Using IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2019 data, this brief explores the relationship between students' gender, their confidence and achievement in mathematics and science, and their aspirations to pursue careers in these fields. We find that more boys than girls at grade 8 want to have a mathematics- or…

Young, Gary – ProQuest LLC, 2018
Awareness of congruence and discrepancies within an individual's pathway from career interest to occupational choice offers significant insight into the process of conciliation and foreclosure (i.e., psychological disposition toward a circumscription of career options). Given the significant role of careers, understanding the career developmental…

Siani, Alessandro; Dacin, Claudiu – New Directions in the Teaching of Physical Sciences, 2018
Tackling the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills shortage is an ongoing challenge for governments and policymakers worldwide. While the last decade has seen an increase in student enrolment into STEM degree courses in the UK, the gender gap remains a persistent issue in academia. In order to understand the causes…

Keck Frei, Andrea; Berweger, Simone; Bieri Buschor, Christine – European Journal of Teacher Education, 2017
The aim of the current study is to better understand the decision-making of men considering teaching as a career option. By means of a longitudinal study (n = 226), we examined the persistence of male academic high-school students in Switzerland interested in teaching during transition to higher education. For 85 men attending information events…

Cruickshank, Vaughan – Australian Association for Research in Education (NJ1), 2012
This paper presents a critical analysis of literature relating to why males choose to become primary school teachers. Discussion within the paper concentrates on identifying and exploring connections between what is currently known about being a male primary school teacher and what motivates these men as they both pursue and practice within the…

Sikora, Joanna; Pokropek, Artur – OECD Publishing (NJ1), 2011
This paper provides a comprehensive overview of adolescent career plans reported in PISA 2006. Its main focus is on the differences in the status and area of employment expected by girls and boys in high school. In almost all countries, girls lead boys in their interest in non-manual, high status professional occupations. This can be seen as a…

Brunner, C. Cryss; Kim, Yong-Lyun – Journal of Research on Leadership Education, 2010
The purpose of this essay is to examine and respond to Tom Glass's (2000) assertions about the dearth of women in the superintendency using the lenses of new data (from two large national studies) and analysis--an analysis that primarily focuses on women superintendents' and central office administrators' formal, experiential, and personal…

Davis-Kendrick, Kaetrena D. – Behavioral & Social Sciences Librarian, 2009
A recent American Library Association (ALA) report has shown that less than 1% of credentialed librarians are African American males. This article discusses possible reasons for this dearth; and, in an effort to inform future LIS recruiting and marketing campaigns, the included study attempted to discover which factors lead African American males…

Sikora, Joanna; Saha, Lawrence J. – Educational Research and Evaluation, 2009
In this article, we investigate whether adolescent girls are more determined to enter professional careers compared to boys across countries. To this end, we analyse the data from the 2006 survey of OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). First, we establish whether girls are more ambitious than boys net of their academic…

Perry, Justin C.; Przybysz, Jeff; Al-Sheikh, Muna – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 2009
The present study investigated the relevance of the "aspiration-expectation gap" and traditional gender differences among urban youth in middle school and high school (N = 294). Results failed to indicate a significant difference between the occupational prestige levels of aspired and expected careers, but did indicate a significant difference…

Scanlan, Thomas J. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1980
Male entrepreneurs were administered Holland's vocational preference inventory. Respondents were classified as either craft entrepreneurs or opportunistic entrepreneurs, and the characteristics of the two groups were compared. Results indicated that the craft entrepreneurs had a Holland occupational code of ERA. Opportunistic entrepreneurs had a…

Chusmir, Leonard H. – Journal of Counseling and Development, 1990
Summarizes research that shows men who choose female-dominated occupations possess many of characteristics of women in same jobs and are comfortable with their masculine sexuality (although they score lower in Bem's masculine identity than do traditional men). Presents framework to understand process of men's nontraditional career choice.…

Francis, Becky – Journal of Education and Work, 2002
Career aspirations of 57 British girls and 64 boys aged 14- 16 were examined. Girls' choices have become far more ambitious. In contrast to the literature, these boys' aspirations remain high. Choices still reflect a deeply embedded gender dichotomy and demonstrate little recognition of changes in the labor market. (Contains 33 references.) (SK)

Lease, Suzanne H. – Career Development Quarterly, 2003
Tests a model of men's nontraditional occupational choice, using a longitudinal sample of college-age men in both gender traditional and nontraditional occupations. Liberal social attitudes, degree aspirations, and socio-economic status were directly predictive of nontraditional career choice. (Contains 35 references and 2 tables.) (GCP)
