Cultural Competency among Online Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree Faculty: A Quantitative Study
Bannis, Alicia
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
As the United States is becoming increasingly culturally diverse, so are nurse educators expected to provide an evidence-based approach to training in a multicultural learning environment. Educators are to adopt culturally responsive strategies in response to the increasing ethnically and culturally diverse student population. Many nursing schools offer online coursework and components or have moved their programs online exclusively. The virtual modality increases the accessibility of education to larger, more diverse populations. National accrediting bodies have identified cultural competence as a critical standard in education. However, the literature regarding cultural competence does not address the preparedness of Bachelor of Science (BSN) faculty who teach online. This dissertation study explored whether there was a statistically significant difference between the levels of cultural competency of online BSN degree faculty who had (a) only online cultural competency training, (b) only face-to-face cultural competency training, (c) both online and face-to-face cultural competency training, (d) no cultural competency training. Using a non-experimental, comparative descriptive design, the researcher investigated nursing faculty (N = 112) who worked in an online BSN or RN-BSN program. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics for hypothesis testing indicated statistically significant differences between the dependent variables mean. These findings suggested that differences in levels of cultural competency may vary due to the training modality. The results also suggested future research may identify specific training for faculty who teach online BSN programs.
