To expose a fundamental conflict in journalism between newsworthiness and objectivity (or novelty and authority) this monograph first examines the parallel between news environment and physical environment. Objectivity is defined here not as a description of the environment, but as symbols in the minds of significant publics, or "pseudoenvironments." By examining how journalists strive to match their reports to existing pseudoenvironments, the monograph builds a case against dominant systems-oriented, novelty-excluding, authority-enhancing approaches. The theories of Yi-Fu Tuan are discussed in relationship to journalism, including his efforts to introduce novel, or alien, considerations into the authority-centered coherence of the dominating pseduoenvironments of analytical thought. According to Tuan, much experiential data are lost because the data cannot fit into concepts derived uncritically from the physical sciences. It is suggested that journalistic decisions should be informed by the larger human values at stake in them. The relationship between the enclosure of pseudoenvironments and the purpose of the news to disclose is also discussed. The fact that news values, like other pseudoenvironments, tend to dictate perception by anticipating it is explored. Finally, the document calls for a modification of journalistic procedure in education and practice, based on modification of projective techniques in psychology. (CRH)
