This survey of 82 institutions and 490 teachers serving deaf students found that significant numbers of deaf students also have vision problems and that teachers do not receive adequate training and information to meet the needs of this population. (Author/JDD)

This article argues that orientation and mobility (O&M) training should be part of functional and meaningful activities for children and youth with severe multiple disabilities including a visual impairment. Evidence is provided that out-of-context instruction has not been effective, and the role of the O&M instructor is discussed. (DB)

Positive reinforcement (food) presented both regularly and variably was effectively used to reduce self-stimulatory behavior in a 12-year-old profoundly retarded visually impaired male over a 2-month period.
