Nathan Gavigan; Sarahjane Belton; Una Britton; Shane Dalton; Johann Issartel – European Physical Education Review, 2024
Although there is a plethora of tools available to assess children's movement competence (MC), the literature suggests that many have significant limitations (e.g. not being practical for use in many 'real-world' settings). The FMS[superscript 2] assessment tool has recently been developed as a targeted solution to many of the existing barriers…

Stöckel, Tino; Hughes, Charmayne M. L. – Developmental Psychology, 2015
This experiment examined how multiple planning constraints affect grasp posture planning in 6- to 10-year-old children (n = 16 in each group) by manipulating the intended object end-orientation (left end-down, right end-down) and initial precision demands (standard, initial precision) of a bar transport task. Results indicated that grasp posture…

Hadad, Bat-Sheva; Maurer, Daphne; Lewis, Terri L. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2010
Adults are skilled at perceiving subjective contours in regions without any local image information (e.g., [Ginsburg, 1975] and [Kanizsa, 1976]). Here we examined the development of this skill and the effect thereon of the support ratio (i.e., the ratio of the physically specified contours to the total contour length). Children (6-, 9-, and…

Thibaut, Jean-Pierre; Toussaint, Lucette – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2010
Few studies have explored the development of response selection processes in children in the case of object manipulation. In the current research, we studied the "end-state comfort effect," the tendency to ensure a comfortable position at the end rather than at the beginning of simple object manipulation tasks. We used two versions of the…

Hatwell, Yvette – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1987
Recent work on the development of the perceptual information-seeking function of the hand in relation to its motor-executive function is reviewed. (PCB)

Miyahara, Motohide; Tsujii, Masatsugu; Hori, Miwako; Nakanishi, Kazunori; Kageyama, Hidenori; Sugiyama, Toshiro – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1997
A study compared the motor coordination of 26 Japanese children (ages 6-15) with Asperger syndrome and 14 with learning disabilities using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children. Although no relationship was found between intellectual and motor function, both groups demonstrated motor delay. Children with autism had poorer ball skills. (CR)

Barringer, M. D.; Kosal-Smither, C. – 1982
A resource and activity guide for the developmentally disabled that focuses on fine motor skills is presented. Attention is directed to fine motor behavior during the first year (vision, grasp, and release and reaching), and behaviors developing at 13 months (the interaction of fine motor and cognitive skills). An introductory section considers…

Barringer, M. D.; Kosal-Smither, C. – 1982
A resource and activity guide for the developmentally disabled that focuses on methods to teach students skills essential to learning is presented. It is noted that once students begin to acquire these critical skills, they can become active participants in group learning activities, rather than waiting for their turn in individual sessions. They…
