Developing Military Leaders of Character: The Sample Case of Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen, U.S. Military Academy Superintendent
Matthews, Michael; Ryan, Diane M.; Lerner, Richard M.
Journal of Character Education, v16 n1 p65-75 2020
The mission statement of the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), commonly known as West Point, clearly articulates character is a core competency needed to be an effective Army officer. But the lessons of a protracted period of war and conflict, beginning with the events of September 11, 2001, have underscored the importance of character in the military domain. After serving a variety of leadership positions in the Army, Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen, was appointed the 59th superintendent of West Point in 2013. This article describes how character development became one of Robert Caslen's strategic priorities in his new position. It discusses the 2011-instituted West Point Leader Development System (WPLDS); the theoretical and empirical bases for WPLDS; and building character at West Point, including skill building curricula, positive and sustained mentoring, remedial mentoring, and opportunities to lead. It concludes that the unique character development approach initiated by Caslen recognizes that cadets come from diverse backgrounds, and that not all cadets have the Army and West Point values internalized when they first arrive. Under the developmental WPLDS model, and with the support of the curriculum, mentors, and leadership opportunities, all cadets are thought to have the potential of fulfilling the mission of West Point by becoming the leaders of character vital to the Army and the nation.
