During the 1978 agricultural season, migrant farmworkers and their families occupied 2,079 rental units at 26 migrant housing centers provided by the Office of Migrant Services. Supportive services at the centers included day care centers for children two to five years of age, a few infant care facilities, and access to medical serivces, nutritional services, cultural and recreational programs, employment information, and other referral services and counseling programs. During 1978, occupancy of the centers numbered 12,291 individuals in 2,409 families. The average size of the families exceeded five members each. Some 1,914 families were turned away. Annual incomes ranged from 182 families earning less than $2,000 annually to 182 families earning more than $9,500. The average income was $5,633. Of the 6,137 persons 18 or over, 4,316 had completed 1 to 7 years of school, 651 had completed 9-11 years, and 273 had completed 12 years. Ethnic categories included 45 Anglo, 375 Mexican American, 1,983 Mexican, and 6 Negro families. Mexico was the home base for 42.3% of the families, followed by 24.2% from Texas and 22.4% from California. This 1978 operational survey of the migrant housing centers is essentially a group of tables presenting detailed statistical characteristics of the migrant residents at each center. (DS)
