Examining the Experiences of Parents, Guardians, and Teachers in an Immigrant Newcomer Parent Program in an Urban Middle School (Grades 7 & 8)
Laksmi Mercedes Olmeda
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Rider University
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of parents and educators after the implementation of an immigrant parent program in an urban middle school that lacked parental involvement support. This qualitative study used multiple data collection methods to triangulate the data. Study participants provided their contributions through surveys, a focus group, and one-on-one structured interviews. The Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler Model of Parent Involvement Process was the theoretical framework used to understand factors affecting the involvement of parents. The data retrieved through these methods were evaluated with stakeholders using the Thematic Analysis process. The findings of this study allowed the researcher to develop recommendations that other schools can use to attempt to increase the involvement of immigrant families in their schools.
